A letter from Tugi
This is the tour I built for the young crew on a tight window. You've got a week-plus in Mongolia, you want the Gobi, and you still want the central steppe. The trade-off is a lot of driving — and the driving is worth it.
We push hard the first half: UB to the Gobi in two days, then two days moving between the desert's big three — Yoliin Am ice canyon, Khongoriin Els singing dunes, and the Flaming Cliffs. Camel trek included. Desert night included.
The back half is the reset. We roll north through central Mongolia, soak at Tsenkher hot springs, then a full day on horseback in the hills above Tsetserleg — fire and stew that night. Then home. If you want a slower pace, take Southern Gobi in August instead — same stops, three extra days.
Itinerary
Gobi
📍Ulaanbaatar·Baga Gazriin Chuluu·Steppe ger camp
🚐🥾🛖
Early drive south. Stop at the Baga Gazriin Chuluu granite outcrops. Tonight: ger camp on the edge of the steppe.
Long drive south on paved road. Baga Gazriin Chuluu is a granite outcrop with a small monastery hidden inside — worth the 30-minute detour. We arrive at a ger camp on the steppe edge by sundown.
📍Steppe·Umnugobi province·Yoliin Am gorge·Family ger
🚐🥾🛖
Drive into Umnugobi. Yoliin Am ice canyon — a valley that holds ice into July. Walk 2 km up the gorge to where the ice still sits. Overnight at a family camp.
Into proper Gobi. Yoliin Am is the famous ice canyon — even in June it holds slabs of ice on the river floor. We walk in about 2 km in the afternoon, get to where the cliff shadows turn cold and the vultures circle overhead. Family ger for the night.
📍Yoliin Am·Khongoriin Els · Singing Dunes
🚐🐪🏔️
Four hours driving to the Singing Dunes. Camel ride at golden hour (~2 hours). Climb the tallest dune for sunset. Sleep in the desert.
Four-hour drive to the Singing Dunes — 100 km of sand, up to 800m tall. Camel ride at golden hour, gentle pace, about two hours. Climb the main dune for sunset. Sleep at the foot of the sand.
📍Khongoriin·Bayanzag · Flaming Cliffs·Red canyon·Ger camp
🚐🥾🛕
Drive to Bayanzag (the Flaming Cliffs) — where the first dinosaur eggs were found in 1923. Red-rock hike at golden hour. Ger camp.
Drive east to Bayanzag — where dinosaur eggs were first identified in 1923 by Roy Chapman Andrews' expedition. The rock turns deep red at golden hour. We walk the rim, drop into a small side canyon for the last light. Ger camp for the night.
Central
📍Bayanzag·Mandalgovi·Orkhon Valley family camp
🚐
The long transition day, ~8 hours on the road. Camel saddle sore by now but the landscape starts to green up by afternoon. Orkhon Valley family camp for the night.
This is the leg that earns you the second half. Mostly paved, occasionally washboard. We stop at a few overlooks, pick up groceries somewhere along the way. By dusk the landscape has changed completely — grass, herds, the first proper rivers.
📍Orkhon·Tsenkher springs·Wooden pool camp
🚐♨️✨
Shorter drive, ~3 hours. Hot-spring soak. First proper bath since UB. Everyone sleeps well.
Tsenkher is 86°C at the source, piped into wooden tubs at varying temperatures. First proper bath in a week. You soak, you read, you soak again. By dark there's nothing but you, the water, and the stars.
📍Tsenkher·Tsetserleg·Family horse camp
🚐🐎🍴
Short drive to Tsetserleg in Arkhangai. Full day on horseback into the surrounding hills with a local horse family. Picnic lunch on a ridge. Family camp for the night — fire, khorkhog, stars.
Tsetserleg is the capital of Arkhangai — small green provincial town built into a hillside, the kind of place you'd happily get stuck in. We meet the horse family by mid-morning and spend the day in the saddle: gentle climb into the larch hills behind the town, picnic on a ridge with the valley spread out below, slow ride back as the light goes long. Night at the family camp — fire, khorkhog (lamb cooked on hot stones), milk vodka if you want it, stars if the sky cooperates.
📍Family camp·Karakorum·Erdene Zuu Monastery·Ulaanbaatar
🚐🛕🏙️
Drive back east, ~6 hours. Stop at Erdene Zuu Monastery in Karakorum. UB by evening.
Slow morning, then we point east. Erdene Zuu Monastery in Karakorum is the oldest surviving Buddhist monastery in Mongolia — 16th century, built from the stones of the old Mongol capital. Walk the courtyards, then UB by evening.
Act I · The Gobi

“The Singing Dunes actually sing. Sit at the top for five minutes and you hear the sand slide — a low hum you feel in your chest.”

The central leg
The country's heart. Orkhon Valley waterfalls, Erdene Zuu and the ruins of Karakorum, the dormant Khorgo volcano, the pale water of Terkhiin Tsagaan Nuur, Tsenkher hot springs, and long evenings at a family ger camp with khorkhog on the fire.

Nomadic stays
In the Gobi we alternate desert tents and ger camps. In the central leg you're guests of families I already know — buuz on the table, milk tea going, kids teaching you to throw ankle bones.
If you've never been to a ger, these pages help. The short version: right foot in, move clockwise, say yes to the tea.
Your first ger visit
Practicals
This tour has the longest driving days of the season. If that’s a hard no, take Southern Gobi in August instead — same places, more time.
Before you apply
Day 5 (Gobi → Orkhon) is ~8 hours and most of it is off-road. It's the longest. Days 1, 2, and 8 are 5–6 hours each. Days 3, 4, 6, and 7 are short drives (1–4 hours). We stop every 90 min or so. It's doable — but you'll earn your hot-spring night.
Yes — some travellers prefer a dune walk at sunset instead. No judgement, no price difference.
Gobi in June: 15–28 °C days, 5–12 °C nights. Central: 12–24 °C days, 5–15 °C nights. Wind is the bigger factor — it can turn a warm day cold in 10 minutes.
Gobi at golden hour (dunes + Flaming Cliffs) is unreal. Long days with dust mean lens cleaning kit, not just a cloth. A dust-sealed zoom is ideal.
Gobi ends Jun 20. There's a 10-day gap before Playtime (Jul 1 – 4) — plenty of room to explore UB or take a side trip. Naadam (Jul 8 – 14) pairs even better with that breathing room. Ask and I'll help you sort it.
